WASHINGTON, DC <\/b><\/span>\u2013 Pennsylvania U.S. Senator John Fetterman on Wednesday attended a U.S. Senate hearing in the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry to discuss foreign ownership in American agriculture and push for more restrictions on foreign ownership of farmland and other resources.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLet me say, I hope many of\u202four colleagues agree that the Chinese\u202fgovernment and other U.S.\u202f adversaries should own zero\u202fagricultural land in our\u202fcountry,\u201d <\/b><\/span>said Sen. Fetterman in the hearing.\u202f\u201cI mean, they are taking back our\u202fpandas.\u202fWe should take back all of their\u202ffarmland.\u202fThis is really a national\u202fsecurity issue, and it is a food\u202fsecurity issue.\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLike my colleagues, I’m concerned\u202fwith foreign countries\u2019 and foreign corporations’\u202fownership in our agriculture supply chain,\u201d<\/b><\/span> Sen. Fetterman continued. \u201cOn small farmers in PA, there are over 56,000 of\u202fthem here in Pennsylvania that face enough\u202fhardships, and they don’t need\u202fto compete with foreign\u202fgovernments buying our land.\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

This hearing is not the first time Sen. Fetterman has taken action to protect American farmland from ownership by our foreign adversaries. In the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act, Sen. Fetterman strongly supported an amendment that<\/span>bans<\/span><\/a> China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran from purchasing U.S. farmland and agricultural companies. It also requires the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States to review foreign investments and transactions in American agriculture to evaluate whether such investments would compromise national security.<\/span><\/p>\n

The witnesses at today\u2019s hearing included Mrs. Gloria Monta\u00f1o Greene, Deputy Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation, U.S. Department of Agriculture; Mr. Harrison Pittman, Director, National Agricultural Law Center at the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture; and Dr. David L. Ortega, Associate Professor, Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics at Michigan State University.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false}}
