Trade Adjustment Assistance Reauthorization Act would restore job training, income support, and relocation help for displaced workers through\u202f2031<\/em><\/h3>\n\n

Washington, D.C.<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 On April 11, U.S. Senator John Fetterman (D\u2011PA) joined Senators Gary Peters (D\u2011MI), Ron\u202fWyden (D\u2011OR), Chuck\u202fSchumer (D\u2011NY), Tammy\u202fBaldwin (D\u2011WI), Kirsten\u202fGillibrand (D\u2011NY), Amy\u202fKlobuchar (D\u2011MN), Ed\u202fMarkey (D\u2011MA), Jack\u202fReed (D\u2011RI), Bernie\u202fSanders (I\u2011VT), Tina\u202fSmith (D\u2011MN), and Elizabeth\u202fWarren (D\u2011MA) to introduce the\u00a0Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Reauthorization Act of\u202f2025<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t call yourself pro\u2011worker while shipping American jobs overseas,\u201d\u00a0said Senator Fetterman.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cFor 50 years\u00a0TAA<\/em>\u00a0kept our manufacturing backbone strong\u2014helping laid\u2011off steelworkers in Johnstown, machinists in Erie, and thousands more learn new skills and land new jobs. It didn\u2019t do everything it should have, but it helped. Letting it die was a gut punch. This bill brings\u00a0TAA<\/em>\u00a0back stronger and longer, because when trade deals go sideways, workers deserve a real shot at the next job\u2014not a sad smile and a pink slip.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Since its creation in 1974,\u00a0more than five\u202fmillion Americans have used\u00a0TAA<\/em><\/strong>, with over 75\u202fpercent landing new jobs within six months. Extending the program through 2031 will give manufacturers and communities the certainty they need to plan long\u2011term investments and keep skilled talent on the factory floor.<\/p>\n\n

TAA<\/em>\u2019s authority expired in 2022. Since then,\u00a0200,000 laid\u2011off workers have applied for help but received none<\/strong>, and benefits for those still enrolled will disappear entirely in 2026 unless Congress acts. The\u00a0Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Reauthorization Act of\u202f2025<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0would renew the\u00a0TAA<\/em>\u00a0program\u00a0through 2031<\/strong>, giving workers who lose their jobs, hours, or wages because of unfair foreign trade access to:<\/p>\n\n

  • Skills training and apprenticeships<\/strong><\/li>\n\n
  • Job\u2011search and relocation assistance<\/strong><\/li>\n\n
  • Extended income support while they train<\/strong><\/li>\n\n
  • Health\u2011coverage tax credits and other wrap\u2011around services<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

    Senator Fetterman was an original cosponsor of the bill last Congress, when it cleared the Senate Finance Committee with bipartisan support but stalled before final passage. The senators brought the bill to the floor in early April and hope to see it move through committee once the Senate returns from recess.<\/p>\n\n

    The\u00a0Trade Adjustment Assistance Reauthorization Act of\u202f2025<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is endorsed by the\u00a0United Auto Workers (UAW), United Steelworkers (USW), AFL\u2011CIO, and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n
